Sometimes, you want angst: stories that contain sad, depressing themes or unresolved, emotionally distressing events that put characters through the wringer and make us feel for them. Typically they are dark stories that focus on emotional suffering. They might end on a happy or hopeful note, but you can't call them upbeat romances.
