Different fics handle the theme of infidelity or partner betrayal in unique ways. In some, Snape or Harry is cheating on the other, while in other stories one of them features as the third party (e.g., Harry is in a committed relationship with someone, and he's seeing Snape on the side), or the infidelity is even more complicated than that.
